The case of Mont Blanc Tunnel (Traforo del Monte Bianco)



The video shows the journey from Italy to France, through Mont Blanc Tunnel, from an onboard point of view.

The Mont Blanc tunnel in numbers:

  1. 5000 vehicles per day on average pass through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
  2. 68 % of traffic is composed of light vehicles.
  3. 76 % of imports and exports for the Haute-Savoie pass through the Mont Blanc Tunnel
  4. It's length is 11.6 kilometers.
  5. The tunnel was opened to traffic after 19 years of  design and construction works, in 1965
  6. It was the world's longest road tunnel from 1965 till 1978.
  7. It is 2 times longer compared to Great St Bernard Tunnel, which is 5.8 km long, and held the title of the world's longest tunnel at the time of its opening, in 1964.
  8. At an elevation of 1395 meters it is the second highest motorway in Europe, after San Bernardino Tunnel which lies at 1631 meters and is part of Switzerland's A13 motorway.
  9. It lies 2480 meters beneath the summit of the Aiguille du Midi, making it the world's deepest road tunnel and the second deepest tunnel, after the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is a railway tunnel.
  10. A fire that started from a truck in 1999 claimed the lives of 38 people. Italian security guard Pierlucio Tinazzi saved the lives of 10 of the 12 survivors, but died in the process of helping others out of the tunnel.
